TAKING THE EL
I used to take the train to the University of Illinois-Chicago through downtown Chicago every day to get to my classes. One of the things I hated was that the train always used to make me feel more tired than I actually was since I had nothing to do on it but sit there and sleep. However, I’d encounter the most interesting people while on the train. There was the old woman who always hid her face with a veil who asked me how high my diabetes glucose levels were. There was also the small, red-haired girl who always wore a pentagram around her neck and sunglasses even in the winter. I always wanted to talk to her, but I never could. I never had an excuse. And I regret it. Sometimes when I got on the train, a man would sit in the back and start composing a rap about the different stops the train made. Someone once stepped onto the train in full fireman regalia and sat down as if nothing were unusual. I also saw priests, nuns, people with their entire faces tattooed, and a man dressed up like Batman. Thinking back on all that, I almost miss taking the train.
